Ten times the fun

Big Gay Day is one of the most treasured events on Brisbane’s queer calendar – and this year, the old girl turns 10. By Garrett Bithell.

One of queer Brisbane’s biggest and most-loved events, Big Gay Day, has reached its tenth anniversary, and will take over Alden Street surrounding the Wickham Hotel on Sunday, March 7.
With a huge line-up including Kelly Rowland, Katie Underwood and Killer Queen performing on a massive stage with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, as well as a host of DJs such as Les Smith, Paulie B and Matt Steer, it’s set to be the biggest Big Gay Day yet. While the event has attracted over 6,000 revellers each year, organisers are expecting even more this time around.
As always, the focus on the day will be to raise funds for charities that support then gay community, with a particular emphasis on helping to prevent youth suicide. To date more than $150,000 has been donated to various organisations. This year, the recipients will be the Gay and Lesbian Welfare Association, PFLAG and Open Doors.
Joining the live acts and DJs will be roving entertainers, a host of Brisbane’s favourite drag queen, and special guest and host, comedian Cal Wilson.
